Summer Sales of Newspapers Heat Up

Media merger mania continued this summer with Thomson Corp. selling all but one of its U.S. newspapers and other companies like Newhouse and Gannett Co. making strategic purchases of other properties.

Among the latest mergers and acquisitions:

Thomson announced June 8 that Gannett would pay $1.125 billion for 21 newspapers in Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, Wisconsin and Utah. The papers have a combined circulation of 466,000.

Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., of Birmingham, Ala., bought 17 dailies from Thomson in Indiana, South Georgia, and West Virginia for $455 million, the companies announced June 8. The papers have a combined circulation of 260,000.

Media General announced on June 13 it had bought five dailies and a half dozen weekly newspapers in the Southeast from Thomson for $237 million. Media General, based in Richmond, Va., owns the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Tampa Tribune. "For the first time, the footprint of our publishing division will extend into South Carolina and Alabama," said J. Stewart Bryan III, Media General's chairman and chief executive officer. "These markets are the best that Thomson has to offer in the Southeast."

Thomson also announced June 13 that Copley Press had bought The Repository in Canton, Ohio, for an undisclosed amount.

Pulitzer Inc., owner of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, announced June 26 it is buying the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis from the Journal Register Co. for $165 million. Pulitzer is adding 38 weekly newspapers, the Ladue News and various niche publications. The deal is expected to close this fall.

Gannett Co. Inc., the nation's largest newspaper group, is acquiring Central Newspapers Inc., owner of The Arizona Republic, The Indianapolis Star and four other daily newspapers, in a deal worth $2.6 billion, the companies announced June 28.The sale would end the journalism dynasty of the Pulliam family, owners of Central. …
