I am hopeful about the new millennium because I believe hope is a moral imperative. If the millennium signifies nothing more than billions of people thinking there's a shift occurring, that alone can change things; this millennial moment can interrupt the flow of history.

Obviously we stand at a crossroads. Humanity at its best exalts the dream of a loving world, and at no other time in history have we had more technological know-how with which to build that dream. Yet our collective dream is not yet sacred, or reverential, or even deeply peaceful. From the rejection of nuclear test ban treaties to the genetic alteration of our food supply to consistent assaults on the biosphere and upon each other, as a race of people we are displaying mass behavior that is maladaptive for human survival.

Gandhi said that the problem with humanity is that we are not in our right minds. Yet we have the power, in any moment, to change our minds and thus change our lives. I see more people every day moving their lives in a more spiritual direction: putting the values of peace before the values of war, emphasizing forgiveness over judgment, choosing to love rather than giving in to fear. …
