Micromedex Adds RX Pricing to Its Clinical Package

In its first venture outside the purely clinical arena, Micromedex is now offering an electronic file that includes pricing information for nearly 200,000 health-care items along with clinical-screening and error-prevention functions. The integrated technology product is called UltiMedex, and the target market ranges from community and hospital pharmacies to pharmacy benefit managers to on-line drugstores. Denver-based Micromedex is owned by the Medical Economic Co., publisher of Drug Topics.

The drug-file component builds on the database compiled by Red Book, another Medical Economics print and electronic data entity, said Cynthia McBride, product manager for retail pharmacy initiatives at Micromedex. The pricing information available includes average wholesale price, suggested retail price, federal upper limits, and wholesaler survey prices, she added. There also are electronic medicationmanagement applications as well as clinical functions, such as the capacity to identify products that are free of certain ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions.

The major clinical components are grouped into medication advisory screening (MAS), dosing, patient advice, and IV screening. …
