Middle East Institute Holds 56th Annual Conference

"Turbulence and Transition in U.S.-Middle East Relations" was the theme for the Middle East Institute's 56th annual conference held Oct. 10 and 11 at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, DC. In welcoming remarks Ambassador Edward Walker, Jr., MEI's president, said the conference theme was chosen "because in this time of turbulence, our mission is more critical than ever."

Ambassador Walker described MEI's work last year and its plans for the year ahead. "Over the past year," he noted, "we have been building our capabilities to respond to help both Americans and those in the Middle East to make sense of the daily developments that affect all of our lives."

Turning to the future, Ambassador Walker said, "We've introduced four issues that we'll be looking at over the next year. First is political, social, and economic development. We're going to look at the challenge for the region and what it means for U.S. policy. Our energy program will work to improve America's understanding of the facts of supply and demand and what energy security really means. …
