New Center for Arab-American Studies at University of Michigan-Dearborn

Betsy Barlow is the program coordinator for the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The University of Michigan campus at Dearborn, the hub of the largest Arab-American community in the U.S., has announced the formation of a Center for Arab American Studies. Dr. Paul Wong, dean of the School of Literature, Sciences and the Arts, stated that "Arabs have been coming to the United States for over a century, yet their history, culture and daily lives are largely unnoticed by the larger society. Located in the epicenter of metropolitan Detroit's large and highly diverse Arab population, the UM-D is uniquely situated to provide scholars and students with hands-on research opportunities, to engage with Arab-American community organizations on a wide range of policy issues, and to attract a large and interested public audience." He believes this is the first Arab-American studies center in the U.S.

"Arabs have been coming to the United States for over a century."

The center will immediately begin recruitment of more students, and will expand its course offerings, starting in the fall of 2000. The center also proposes a short- and long-term fellows program for senior researchers and practitioners, who will supplement core courses with seminar topics from their own research and disciplines. A professional education program will provide credit and noncredit courses for professionals in the fields of health, social work, immigration, law, employment, business and education designed to improve cultural competency of professionals working with Arab and Muslim Americans. …
