WAGING PEACE: Council for the National Interest

The Council for the National Interest, a membership organization concentrating on U.S. Middle East policy, has a new executive director, retired foreign service officer Eugene Bird, and new quarters at 1511 K St. NW, Suite 1043, Washington, DC 20005, telephone (202) 628-6962. Bird succeeded former congressman and 1980 presidential candidate John Anderson (RIL) as CNI executive director.

A CNI founder and its current chairman is former Illinois Rep. Paul Findley (R-IL), author of They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel's Lobby. Former Rep. David Bowen (D-MS) was CNI executive director until 1992. The organization seeks to build up grassroots support and political action groups throughout the United States. To date it has eight chapters in Seattle; Los Angeles; Dallas; Chicago; Syracuse, NY; northern Virginia; Montgomery County, MD; and North Fort Myers, FL, and an additional 30 local steering committees.
