MARC ELLIS AT OPEN TENT/LA

"After Yom Kippur: America, Israel and the Future of Jewish Life" was the title of an Oct. 7 talk by Prof. Marc Ellis sponsored by Open Tent/LA in the Workmen's Center.

"I'm interested in the future of Jewish life and what it means to be faithful as a Jew in our time," said the director of the Center for American and Jewish Studies at Baylor University in Waco, TX.

"We as Jews come after the Holocaust and now after Israel, so the map of Jewish life is not just of the Holocaust but Israeli/Palestinian life," stated the Jewish theologican and author of 10 books. Dr. Ellis visibly shocked his largely Jewish audience with the suggestion that the Ark of the Covenant should be accompanied by a gleaming chromium helicopter gunship.

The icon of Constantinian Judaism is the gunship, he argued. Just as Constantinian Christianity occurred when the religion became global and violent, he explained, almost all Jewish resources, money and creativity are devoted to preserving Israel.

"After the Holocaust," he continued, "there was a dialogue with Christians and Jews which meant that Christians were to repent forever for what was done to the Jews. Part of the ecumenical deal was that any criticism of Israel was equated with being anti-Jewish. …
