"We're mad and we're not going to take it any more," was the consensus opinion of more than 300 protesters who gathered on a balmy Saturday, Jan. 4 noon in front of the INS District Office in downtown Los Angeles. The demonstration called for the INS to call off its second mandatory registration of non-resident aliens scheduled for Jan. 10.

"We need a time period free from threats of arrest, Peter Schey, lead counsel for hundreds of men detained Dec. 16, told the Washington Report. "Non-resident aliens aren't going to show up Jan. 10 after hearing what happened last month. The call for the first registration was only made in the Federal Register, which immigration attorneys read. The first batch was advised by their lawyers to show up. But after what has happened, there's a lot of fear out there.

"This is irrational," he said of the call. "There are far more effective uses of government resources to fight terrorism."

Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Southern California Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), told the crowd: "We need to know who is being questioned. …
