What Every New Parent Needs to Know about Childhood Fever. .

Fever is one of the common reasons parents seek medical attention for their children, according to a report in the journal Pediatrics. But it's a symptom, not an illness. Fever is the body's response to an attack from outside or from inside.

Fever helps fight viruses and bacteria, but a high fever does not tell you how sick your child is. A minor sore throat may cause a temperature to soar while a serious strep infection may result in only a low-grade fever.

Contemporary Pediatrics advises parents to (a) take the temperature of an infant younger than 3 months if the child is not breathing, drinking or acting as he or she normally does, and (b) call your pediatrician before starting any anti-fever medicine.

Acetaminophen is the only over-the-counter anti-fever medicine that should be used in a child younger than 6 months. …
