SOME KIDS skip milestones and there's no solid evidence that these lapses are either good or bad. For example, some children may never crawl but go right to walking and some go directly from one-word utterances to complete sentences without going through the stage of using twoor three-word phrases.

ANTICIPATING the next milestone can help you plan ahead. So although most kids don't start crawling or climbing until they are well into the second half of their first year, if you start "child proofing" your home early, you'll be ready when your child becomes mobile.

KNOWING what to expect will better prepare you to handle each stage. For example, knowing that two-year-olds are likely to be negative and test limits (and understanding why this is happening), you'll be more patient and less likely to get into a constant battle of wills. …
