McKesson Helps Independent Pharmacies Enter E-Commerce

About two months ago, Carrington Drug in Carrington, N.D., began offering patients a new way to refill their Rxs--by ordering them on-line. Since adding this service, the pharmacy has started to see some business come in by computer instead of on foot, said pharmacist Lyle Lutman.

How did Lutman provide this service? He used McKesson's .comPharmacy Solutions, a turnkey program that helps members of the wholesaler's Valu-Rite coop and Health Mart franchise set up their own Web site. Lutman said he had looked at several companies that can help community pharmacies establish a presence on the Internet. He chose to go with McKesson, since it's his pharmacy's wholesaler.

According to Ken Morgan, V.P., retail marketing at McKesson-HBOC, there are several advantages to going with .comPharmacy Solutions. There are 4,700 members in Valu-Rite and Health Mart, making up the largest "virtual chain" of retail pharmacies in the market. Independents could become part of valu-rite. …
