In this humorous, satirical, yet deadly serious anthology editor Fiona Giles asked a selection of writers, artists and poets to imagine what they would do if for one day, they had a penis. The women solicited to write (or draw) for the book were asked to consider the phallus as "both anatomical object and cultural stereotype."

Most writers in the collection focused on the anatomical object aspect. "Dick for a Day," says Giles in her introduction, "is particularly interested in what a heterosexual woman would make of a penis if one sprouted from her body, or if--as a number of writers preferred--she received one in the mail."

The editor's decision to include a mostly heterosexual point of view is the book's downfall. A more diverse group of writers-lesbian, bisexual, heterosexual, and let's not forget female to male transsexual-would have resulted in a lively, more interesting collection. As it is, many of the stories begin and end in the same way: a woman, wakes up in the morning with a hard-on and, as the story progresses, is led through the day by her dick, which stands at attention every time it spots a beautiful woman. In some stories, the narrator has sex with another woman. In others, she masturbates. In one story, a woman with a new penis rapes another woman. She is angry at men, or a specific man-her boyfriend. At the end of the day, they give back or lose their penis. Only a few of the stories deal with the implicit homoeroticism inherent in the situation of a woman with a penis having sex with another woman. …
