STRANGE ANGELS: DANCING WITH THE LIVING

Well, I must say that after seeing the Strange Angels perform recently, the only thing that clued me in to the fact that they were once the Welfare Starlets was that one of them was wearing a tutu.

I found myself marvelling at the amazing transformation these women have made, one that goes beyond a change of name. Whereas the Starlets relied, too often in my view, on quirky lyrics, Strange Angels soar to new heights. Tracks like "Angel in the Snow" and "The Goose Song" showcase the vocal talents of Jenny Robinson, Sunny Breaks and backup guest vocalists Lianne Fournier and Kathy Brown.

Don't get me wrong, the offbeat humour one would expect from the Starlets is still there and Robinson and Gutnik haven't stepped away from politics. Songs like "Tax Guide for Aliens" use both elements and the theme of the song comes across beautifully in the lyrics, "In America/ Where the heinous crime becomes prime time. …
