6 BLOCKS: MERYN CADELL

I first met Meryn Cadell about ten years ago, at A-Space -- a Toronto-based art gallery and performance space where we both performed poetry. She struck me then as confident, fearless. Even then, she was an experienced performer and capable of much bigger shows. She had a background in holography of all things -- which struck me as completely mysterious -- and she already knew who she was and where she was going.

Since then, Cadell has charged ahead, growing and developing as an artist. She has released two albums of spoken word pieces, Angel Food For Thought and Bombazine. She continues her artistic exploration and has put out a third album of songs, 6 blocks.

This new album boasts 11 mostly self-penned tunes and a series of talented guests, including Anne Bourne, Fergus Marsh and Jason Sneiderman. Songs like `Why do I do,' have spoken loop behind the melody. "Wash Down" a wonderful pop song features the intriguing background vocals of the eccentric Mary Margaret O'Hara. …
