It is with great sadness that we announce the death of yet another Institute stalwart, Eric Hoyle. Eric was born in humble circumstances near Oldham Lancashire in 1916. On completion of primary education he was apprenticed as a fitter and turner. During his apprenticeship he studied at night school and matriculated. As a fitter and turner he continued at night school to study production engineering.

After a period in the textile industry, which included a spell in Sweden and a period designing industrial knitting machines, Eric was engaged in aircraft and weaponry production as a factory manager during the Second World War. He was very frustrated at not being allowed to join the Royal Air Force.

Shortly after the end of the war Eric and his wife emigrated to South Africa and spent two periods of time there and in Rhodesia. Unfortunately contracts in the textile industry in Southern Africa were not always fully honoured. Eric therefore joined Rhodesia Railways, to which he introduced work study and trained many practitioners. Steady promotion in the personnel department followed.

On his retirement Eric formed - with the assistance of his wife, Marian - his own management consultancy company and carried out many projects in various industries, as well as conducting a full programme of lecturing in all management subjects including work study. His professional career climaxed in a very appropriate way: in 1996, at the age of 80 he was presented by the IMS with the Walter Coultous Award for outstanding services to the Institute overseas and for the following three years the best overseas student of the year was tutored by him - a well-earned hat-trick at the age of 83. …
