Chains Ready to Expand Automation Usage in 2000

Chain pharmacies looking for automation to shoulder more of the drudgery of dispensing may get their wish if the executives we polled carry through on plans to add Robo-R.Ph.s to the lineup.

Automation currently isn't even a blip on the community pharmacy radar, as only about 6% of our independent and chain headquarter respondents said dispensing is automated in their pharmacy. Health-system pharmacies are light-years ahead of their community colleagues, as 52% of our institutional respondents said they've turned dispensing over to the robots.

The picture could change next year in corporate pharmacy, as more than half of the chain respondents to the Drug Topics/Hospital Pharmacist Report survey said they have plans to automate dispensing in least some of their drugstores in 2000. Among hospitals, 34% plan` to add automation, but only 5% of our independent respondents envision capital outlays to pay for dispensing automation next year.

Apparently, pharmacies that already employ automation are sold on the value of those brainy machines. Among community pharmacies that already use automation, 69% expect to expand its sage to additional drugstores in
