Y2K Woes Won't Hurt Pharmacy Financials, Community Leaders Say

Looking ahead to next year, community pharmacy leaders were asked about the financial impact of a host of issues, from the growth of Internet pharmacies to wholesaler consolidations. Of most immediate interest, as the days dwindle down to the end of the 20th century, is the fallout from potential Y2K problems. They're supposed to arise after the bells ring in Jan. 1, 2000, if computers believe 01/01/00 represents New Year's Day 1900. But three out of four independent pharmacy owners and chain headquarter executives believe there will be no financial impact on their stores. They'll know soon enough.

On several other issues on the exclusive Drug Topics/Hospital Pharmacist Report survey, the view from the top at chain headquarters was decidedly sunnier than down on Main Street. More than 70% of the chain executives see the impact of direct-to-consumer drug advertising as positive, while only four in 10 independents regard it that way. Both groups believe the growth of alternative medicine will boost their bottom lines, but about 20% more chain executives made that prediction. …
