Article excerpt

Thank you so much for the Wade Robson poster in your March issue. I love Wade Robson! He is one of the most talented performers and choreographers-not to mention that he is gorgeous. I'm glad that Dance Spirit provided me with an opportunity to drool over my favorite person in the world. Thanks!

I was flipping through my daughter's March issue of DS and wanted to respond to a question from Ellen Stidham of Katy, TX, regarding raising money to help defer the expenses of participating in competitions.

At our dance studio in Ohio, we have a booster club of dancer parents. Every fall, we hold a meeting to elect officers and we conduct fundraisers throughout the year to support our dancers, like selling candles, candy and other gifts. This year we started a dinner fundraiser: each age group at the studio is assigned one week to provide dinners for the other dancers for a small cost. This is a healthy way to keep the kids off the vending machines. We also had a fall carnival fundraiser in our studio parking lot with games and refreshments.

Our treasurer keeps track of each dancer's profit and the money is handed out for dance expenses such as tights, shoes and competition fees. Anyone interested in starting a nonprofit booster club must contact their state for information, as each state has different guidelines (for example, per Ohio state law, booster club money cannot go to dance class fees).
