Pharmacy owners who want some idea of whether a would-be technician is suited to the demands of the job can now direct candidates to a free on-line screening tool. Rxinsider. com is the pharmacy technician training and orientation Web site developed by Gregory Cianfarani, a CVS Corp. pharmacist who had previously worked as a tech for the Rhode Island-based drugstore chain. He sees pharmacists using the program to weed out technician applicants before they ever sit down for an interview, thus avoiding the hassle and expense of the new hire who quits a couple of weeks into the job.

"Unlike other jobs, there's a lot to learn in a pharmacy, but people think it's just ringing a register and counting a few pills," said Cianfarani. "It's a very overwhelming job if you're not expecting it. Applicants who do go through Rxinsider.com will know what to expect, and it helps get rid of those people who are not serious."

The technician orientation program covers pharmacy fundamentals in four parts: general pharmacy information, SIG codes and abbreviations, brand-generic drug names, and prescriber handwriting recognition.
