HCP Institute Opens School Door for DME Education

Article excerpt

Where can durable medical equipment (DME) companies and pharmacists glean useful information about federal and state regulations and statutes and guidelines for compliant operations? Enter Health Care Providers (HCP) Institute, Amarillo, Texas, which is offering one-day, two-day, and three-day courses for the DME industry and pharmacists.

HCP Institute is the brainchild of Jeffrey Baird, Esq., of Brown & Fortunato, P.C., a law firm specializing in DME and pharmacy clients, and Jane W. Bunch, owner of Jane's Billing & Consultation Service. The latter is a Marietta, Ga., firm providing consulting and turnkey billing services for DME companies and pharmacies.

"Over and over we saw companies getting into trouble with the government. The companies didn't know what they were doing," Baird told Drug Topics. "I hear horror stories from companies that have been investigated by the Department of Justice. Pharmacies and DME suppliers pay settlements in the hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars. They are not intentionally doing something wrong but find themselves liable to the government. We put together the institute as preventive maintenance."

Nicole Shannon, executive director of HCP Institute said,"The government is so involved in regulating this industry. So many people get into the durable medical equipment business and don't know the rules and guidelines. We put together the institute to help train people."

The institute is offering eight courses, to be held four times a year at the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Dallas. …
