A recent study conducted by Boston-- based global human resources consultants Drake Beam Morin (DBM) found that in 85 percent of cases, corporations look within their own ranks to find replacements for departing CEOs. But how do you know if top performers have what it takes to do the CEO's job? DBM has identified 10 key competencies to help human resource professionals and senior executives make this decision.

To find out how you or your up-andcoming execs rate as a CEO, take the test and see how you score. Using a 10-point scale (1 is poor, and 10 is exceptional), rate your ability against each competency, then refer to the score chart to find out if you and your colleagues have what it takes to be CEOs.

No matter what your score, DBM's research found that there are no shortcuts to the top. Half of newly appointed CEOs have been with their companies for at least 10 years. Select a company to which you can be loyal, build your experience and expertise, and then aim for the top. …
