A Sri Lankan journalist was killed at his home Oct. 19 in the north of the country, the BBC said. Mayilvaganam Nimalarajan, who reported for the BBC, died when gunmen fired bullets through the window of his study and threw a grenade into the living room of his home in Jaffna.

Nimalarajan, 38, who contributed regularly to the BBC Sinhala and Tamil services, also worked for several other media organizations, both foreign and local.

During recent elections in Sri Lanka, Nimalarajan had filed reports on vote-rigging allegations and the problems of people made refugees by the fighting between Tamil separatists and government forces, according to the BBC. Both of his parents, in their 60s, and his nephew, 11, were hurt in the attack. A local reporter told the French news agency Agence France-Press that "newspaper people are now living in fear" and that tensions ran high in Jaffna after Nimalarajan's death. …
