What Does Today's Top HR Professional Look Like?

Not all human resources executives are cut from the same cloth. But high-rung HR officers do have a lot in common--just check out the 1995-96 members of the Personnel Policies Forum (PPF). Established in 1951 by the Bureau of National Affairs, the PPF each year assembles a group of top HR professionals based on job responsibilities and credentials. Panelists provide the BNA with regular feedback on topics such as: job absence and turnover; the employment outlook; HR department expenditures and staffs; expense reimbursement practices; and year-end holiday plans.

A look at this year's 300 PPF panelists provides insight into the background, specializations and experience that can propel an HR professional to the top: * Top HR executives have labored for years in the field. Out of the 236 panelists who responded to a BNA profile survey, three-quarters have sweated for more than 10 years in HR; 19% for more than 20 years.
