Recognition for three dance educators

The National Dance Association has chosen Cynthia Hoban, chair of the arts department at Moore Square Museum Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, North Carolina, as its K-12 Dance Educator of the Year. The annual award recognizes an educator who uses creative teaching methods and a curriculum that balances the academic, cultural and physical aspects of dance. Hoban has taught for more than 25 years, contributing not only to K-12, but also to Raleigh's professional and higher education dance communities. She directs the Martin Dance Company and teaches and choreographs at Meredith College and North Carolina State University. She also pioneered a kinesthetic computer animation program at Moore, which she uses to create dances for her K-12 students. "It boils down to making contact with these children every day," she says of her work in K-12. "Even kids who struggle in other subjects can be reached through dance. When they're moving, they're learning." As for the future, Hoban says, "I'm going to use this as a way to expand my voice, reach out and carry the message to keep arts in the schools." Lauren Winslow Kearns of Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California, has been named the 2004 California Community College Dance Educator of the Year by The State Community College Organization of Physical Education. Since Kearns joined RH's dance department, she has tripled the number of classes offered and overseen a new focus on technique, creativity and collaboration. …
