On July 29, 1999, at 3:11 p.m., WSB traffic reporter Mark Arum, monitoring the scanners in the traffic center, heard an unusual call. Dozens of ambulances were being summoned to a business complex after an apparent shooting in Buckhead, Ga., outside of the station's Atlanta headquarters.

It was later learned that Mark 0. Barton, a 44-yearold day trader had killed nine people in two buildings before turning the gun on himself at a service station. Days before, troubled by his recent financial losses, he had killed his second wife and two children.

Arum immediately moved to confirm the incident with police and then alerted Lisa Campbell in the WSB newsroom. The station sent reporter Mark Dantre to the scene, and by 3:30 p.m. - 20 minutes after the first call was heard on the scanner - the station had confirmed the story and broadcast their first break-in report with Dantre on location. …
