Reporter Apologizes on Air for Taking Videotape

A Minnesota television reporter charged with misdemeanor theft and vehicle tampering apologized on the air for taking a videotape from a car as part of a story on illegal dogfights.

"Caught up in the rush of getting the story, I went too far," Tom Lyden told viewers in his on-air apology in May. "I went into an unlocked car and took a videotape that wasn't mine. My desire to get the story got the best of me, and I should have known better."

Lyden, of KMSP-TV Channel 9 in Minnesota, had earlier described his actions as "aggressive reporting," according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The reporter took the tape from a parked car while covering a police raid of illegal dog fighting facilities. The station made a copy of the tape, turned over the original to police and then aired the copy of the video, which depicted dogfights. …
