The Society of Professional Journalists gave a $4,000 Legal Defense Fund grant to lawyers representing Kentucky State University students in a censorship case.

The case, Kincaid vs. Gibson, focuses on a yearbook published at the university. Administrators confiscated The Thorobred yearbook (1993-94) justifying the action by saying that it didn't carry the school's official colors and was of poor quality. Two students sued the university officials, and a three-- judge panel ruled that the university's decision was justified. But the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted last November to rehear the case, after the students and their lawyer asked the full court to reconsider.

The case was argued before the 13-- member appeals court on May 30, and a decision is expected by the fall in the potentially far-reaching censorship case. …
