Oklahoma City Bombing Kills 19 Children in Day-Care Center

THE YOUNGEST VICTIMS IN THE OKLAHOMA CITY FEDERAL building bombing on April 19 were those in the day-care center. Twenty-four children were in the America's Kids day-care center on the second floor of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building at the time of the bombing -- the worst in U.S. history. Nineteen of the children, dropped off by their parents that morning, died just minutes later at 9:02 a.m. (central time). All of the children were between the ages of 4 months and 5 years.

The Murrah building day-care center was one of 98 child-care facilities operating in federal buildings nationwide. Although tragedies like this don't happen every day, the bombing represents the kind of risk that weighs heavily on the minds of working parents. For example, the same week, a day-care center on the fourth floor of Boston's city hall received a bomb threat that turned out to be false.
