Anew recruitment approach at The Northern Trust Co. stemmed from a reorganization of its HR department that more closely partners it with line managers. Because of high turnover and new business last summer, the trust operations area needed 10 accounting analysts, instead of one or two at a time.

"After the HR reorganization, there was more of a sense of ownership. I had a recruiter working specifically in the trust operations area, so she was more aware of their needs prior to them coming to [us]. She kept her fingers on the pulse of [their] activity," says Marya Kovacik, second vice president, HR. "We were able to respond to our business partners in a more timely and cost-efficient manner."

Recruitment managers decide to place an ad for an accountant analyst position.

June 19

Recruitment ad runs in the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune.

June 20

Kovacik sends a memo to the two department heads in the trust operations group to tell them that a recruitment ad ran and asks if they'd be interested in a recruiting event on June 29. It would be a new idea for recruiting at the company.

June 21

They respond favorably.

June 21-25

Kovacik and the recruiter map out an action plan for the recruiting night. They review more than 200 resumes and screen appropriate candidates to assess whether to invite them to the recruiting night. …
