Employers and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are fairly happy with the pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) they use.

That's the finding of a recent survey conducted by the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute (PBMI), Scottsdale, Ariz. PBMI provides services to help clients choose PBMs.

This past spring, PBMI surveyed employers that had an average of 2,500 or more employees, plus HMOs. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 as the most positive response, most employer respondents (72%) rated their PBM as 7 or better. Nineteen percent, meanwhile, gave their PBM a grade of 5 or lower.

Among 60 HMO respondents of 500 surveyed, meanwhile, more than 70% gave their PBM an overall rating of 7 or better. Another 23%, however, rated their PBM 5 or lower.

How did respondents choose their PBM? Forty percent of employer respondents said they received advice from a consultant. Those who received such help, however, tended to grade PBMs the same as those who did not use a consultant.

Extensive reports were gathered from 60 employer respondents of 3,000 surveyed on the following large PBMs: Aetna Pharmacy Management, Caremark Prescription Service, Diversified Pharmaceutical Services, Express Scripts, Medco Containment Services, National Prescription Administrators, PCS Health Systems, RxPrime, and ValueRx. …
