Pittsburgh Steeler Antwaan Randle El made an unannounced and forced appearance as a contortionist during a game against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 5, 2003. Making a tough bed out of dirt and grass and taking in more than a mouthful of strap, the unusually undersized wide receiver left his temporary side show act unscathed. The Steelers also walked away with a much less painful win for their team. At 5-10 and 185 pounds, Randle El's helmet, and fortunately not his head, suffered most of the twist and tackle.

"In case anyone doubts that football can be hazardous to your health, this photograph is a vivid reminder," said Assistant Managing Editor/Photography David LaBeIIe.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Photographer John Beale shot the photo during the Steelers AFC wild card game. Titled "Facemask," it reveals the risks involved with the game of football.

"Like all good photographers, Beale is ever alert to the possibility that a routine moment can produce an extraordinary photo," said LaBeIIe. …
