Carol Carysforth and Mike Nield's Teacher's Resource File is designed to support their GCSE Applied Business textbooks. The Resource File consists of a wire bound, photocopiable printed book, CD-ROM, and access to Richer Sounds' Student Zone and Heinemann's own internet hotlinks.

The book follows the chapter structure of the authors' GCSE Applied Business textbooks and covers the syllabus of each awarding body. There is an introduction describing what is in the Resource File, plus sections for each unit, it

Each unit has a very brief overview of the relevant textbook chapter titles and material contained in the Resource File, teaching notes, a key to activities in the Resource File, and the activities themselves. Teaching notes consist of pointers to what students should understand at the end of each chapter rather than notes teachers can actually use while teaching.

The differentiation between core information that all students should understand and information that higher tier students should understand is n useful. It is a pity, however, that there is no guidance on differentiation in teaching or the activities for each unit. Differentiation is important and it would have been particularly valuable to indicate how to achieve this in the activities. Nevertheless, activities are well-written, appropriate to the level of student, and varied, although they do not directly help in compiling a portfolio. Guidance on grading requirements would also have been helpful, either with the activities or the teaching notes.

The CD-Rom contains the whole of the printed book - so pages and activities can be printed or distributed over a network if preferred to photocopying, a key to activities and case studies in the student textbook, and some excellent if rather static PowerPoint presentations. There is at least one presentation for each chapter in the student textbook.

Richer Sounds Student Zone is a web-based resource developed for users of the GCSE Applied Business textbook or Teacher's Resource File and is on the Richer Sounds web site. …
