1995 Buyer's Guide and Consultant Directory

Article excerpt

Welcome to the 1995 version of Information Today, Inc.'s Buyer's Guide and Consultant Directory. This annual compilation is intended as an easy-to-use resource that provides access to information-related products and services for the readers of Computers in Libraries (CIL). For the past nine years it has served as a convenient source in which to find answers to questions such as: Who sells anti-theft devices for public workstations? Which company has software to help keep track of fund raising? Where can a library go to get a certain brand of CD drive?

This extensive guide attempts to cover all aspects of library automation and related information storage and retrieval. As always, one of its strengths is its listings of library systems (OPACs, etc.), more and more of which are running networked platforms. Look under LAN/turnkey systems and integrated systems, as well as online catalogs, to find vendors for specific products. Likewise, the listing of products and software related to CD-ROMs and their networking is large and continues to grow.

Since this time last year, CIL readers have seen a tremendous growth in the use of the World Wide Web and the popularization of graphical browsers such as Mosaic and Netscape, which are used to view Web pages. As noted last year, the Guide includes several types of Internet-related products and services, such as client/server software, navigation browsers, and Internet access and accounts.

This year the Guide also includes a listing for multimedia production software--tools that see heavier use with the increased popularity of graphical browsers on the Web.

The Guide has grown again this year, adding new vendors as well as additional products and services. This edition includes almost 250 vendors and distributors and nearly 1,000 more entries under hardware, software, and services (about 6,000 total). The section listing names of products has grown to over 750. And as noted last year, many vendors list e-mail addresses so you can contact them electronically. This year, several vendors have included URLs for company Web pages, too.

To make it easy to use, the Guide is divided into the following sections:
