Met-Rx Engineers Plan to Expand to Drug Retailers

Met-Rx Engineered Foods, Irvine, Calif., is aiming for a national rollout of its nutritional powdered mix with the same name. Met-Rx comes in two forms: a mix, which can be blended with water, juice, or milk to create a shake, and a bar, in two flavors--chocolate fudge brownie and extreme vanilla ($2.00 to $2.50). Nationwide distribution should be completed by mid-1996. The brainchild of A. Scott Connolly, M.D., MetRx is "nutrient-dense and low in calories and fat." Each serving of the mix has 260 calories; the bar, 310 calories.

Connolly originally developed the supplement some 22 years ago for patients in his critical care practice, explained company president Charles Kosmont. The product has been reformulated to help sick patients maintain lean muscle mass and to aid healthy patients improve their nutrition, he said. Each serving contains 37 grams of Metamyosyn, a proprietary formula created by Connolly. The product serves as a meal replacement as well as a meal supplement, said CEO Roberto Brutoco. …
