In Vail Valley, snowshoers have the run of the slopes

When Bruce Carey, an attorney in Vail, Colorado, went for a medical checkup four years ago, "My internist said, `Exercise or insulin.' I took up snowshoeing. I lost 3 inches from my middle-and needed no insulin." Carey, now 44, hasn't quit his day job, but he is now a part-time snowshoeing guide at Beaver Creek, leading gentle nature tours of 3 miles or so around some of the resort's mellower trails.
