Managed Care Groups Open Dialogue on Possible Merger

With manufacturers, pharmacy benefit managers, and other pharmaceutical industry players merging, why not pharmacy associations?

Representatives of both the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and the American Managed Care Pharmacy Association (AMCPA) confirmed reports that there have been initial discussions to see whether a merger between the two organizations makes sense.

There has been no formal merger proposal put out on the table yet, both sides cautioned, and it is much too early to say how strong the prospects are for an actual merger.

On AMCP's side, interim executive director James Doherty told Drug Topics that, although there have been a few informal discussions between representatives of each organization regarding the possibility of a merger, "there's been no formal approach at all."

On AMCPA's side, executive v.p. Del Konnor agreed. "Right now, we're just talking. There are no formal negotiations that have been opened up."

Industry observers suggest that the idea of merging the two pharmacy organizations may make sense, given their overlapping interests. …
