The practice of public accounting is being revolutionized by technology. New advances in hardware, software, and peripherals are enabling accountants to perform their work more rapidly, efficiently, and accurately. In addition, technology has created opportunities for providing clients with new and valuable services.

Harold Gellis, CPA, has prepared the following material on developments in hardware and software in the areas of accounting, taxation, local area networks, text management, utilities, equipment and ergonomics.

ACCOUNTING

ACCPAC Plus version 6.0

Computer Associates' latest version of ACCPAC Plus, its popular, highend integrated accounting software, features numerous enhancements and new features. Installation has been simplified, application menus have been improved, and password protection has been extended. Data capacity has been increased and reporting capabilities have been significantly enhanced.

For example, the General Ledger & Financial Reporter module now supports up to 65,535 entries per batch, 60,000 batches, and unlimited source codes and journals. In the Accounts Receivable module, the user can define multiple payment terms and assign them to individual customers. System capacity has been increased and reports can be sorted.

In the Payroll module, an employee's payroll expense can be distributed to multiple departments within the same pay period. Non-standard earnings, deductions, and employer contributions detail information can be created, and a workers' compensation report can be generated.

Quik Reports version 6.0

Crystal Services' Quik Reports is a third-party add-on to ACCPAC Plus modules and is designed to generate powerful management reports not available from ACCPAC. Quik Reports uses data from all ACCPAC modules. The program allows multiple levels of subtotaling, multiple line formulas, and full text editing. It even features a built-in formula checker to ensure that formulas in the report are accurate.

RealWorld Accounting and Business Software version 6.0

RealWorld Accounting works under a variety of operating systems including DOS, IBM XENIX, and SCO XENIX. In addition to providing basic accounting modules, RealWorld also has specialized modules such as Professional Invoicing for service industries, and Point-of-Sale Plus for the retailer.

Report Writer & Data Bridge generates customized reports and graphs, and exports accounting data to spreadsheet, word processing, and database applications. Hundreds of add-on packages are available.

TAXATION

Tax Management System version 6.0

Price Waterhouse has introduced the latest version of its Tax Management System (TMS) designed to automate all the functions of a corporate tax department. TMS is a modular, integrated group of federal, state, and fixed asset management packages designed to facilitate corporate tax compliance as well as planning.

TMS is designed to prepare workpapers for the following applications: financial accounting tax provisions; estimated taxes; and tax calculations. TMS also generates federal and multistate facsimile forms for filing with the appropriate tax authorities, and can also be used as a comprehensive "what-if" tax planning tool.

BNA Income Tax Spreadsheet version 90.2

BNA Software, publisher of tax planning software, has released the latest version of its individual income tax planning system, Income Tax Spreadsheet. The system is available in two versions: a stand-alone federal program; and a federal program that is integrated with tax calculations for every state, the District of Columbia, and New York City. Both systems incorporate tax law changes resulting from RRA 90.

Despite its name, Income Tax Spreadsheet is a comprehensive, full-blown tax planning program that projects a client's future tax liability for up to seven years, or allows up to seven alternative tax scenarios to be computed for the current tax year. …
