Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Co. isn't just a U.S. company that does business in other countries. It's truly a global company. The soft-drink giant owns and operates businesses of all sizes in more than 195 countries, managed as six operating units: North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific Rim, North East, Middle East and Africa. In fact, two-thirds of Coke's 31,000 employees work outside of the U.S. Third-country nationals make up the majority of the international service employees. And people of other nationalities head more of the company's division offices than do North Americans.

Each of Coca-Cola's divisions within the six regions has a full HR organization. The professionals within these organizations report directly to Atlanta-based representatives who oversee the six regions. Despite the U.S. leadership, the personnel function itself is a global enterprise. Even within the small ranks of international HR representatives in Atlanta, the company's multiculturalism is reflected. The staff includes personnel from Ireland, Great Britain and Latin America.

The Atlanta staffs support unifies and structurizes the work of the diverse and globe-sprawling HR crew. "We're really focusing on strengthening our field infrastructure," says Jane Prendergast, director of international HR, Pacific Group, who works in Atlanta. "Twice a year, we bring in anywhere from 15 to 20 of our international HR professionals for a two-week orientation period, which is designed specifically to make sure that they understand all of the processes that they need to be involved with, plus get a good perspective on what's going on in Atlanta. …
