* Just off Iris Avenue on Broadway in Boulder, Colorado, Long's Gardens has been a landmark since 1905. Each spring during May and June, thousands of irises bloom in a breathtaking spectrum of colors on the 7-acre site. The gardens are overseen today by Catherine Long Gates, a third-generation member of the founding family. Among her favorite irises, Gates cites these six; all are tall bearded types, unless noted.

'Flopsy'. Pure white flowers have sweet fragrance.

'Firenze Frolic' (top photo). Bred by Catherine Long Gates, this iris has a yellow background bordered in garnet.

'I Love Lace' (photo at right). Orange beards look striking on pale lavender flowers.

'Pallida Variegata' (often listed as 'Zebra'). One of Long's Gardens' all-- time favorites, it features pale purple, grape-scented flowers and cream-- striped foliage.

'Red Rooster'. A border bearded iris with deep red-brown flowers, it reaches about 26 inches high.
