It's Not All About the Markets

Thank you for the wonderfully satirical interview with the fictional publishing CEO in "Put Up or Shut Up" (Sept. 2004). Oh, it's not satire? Well in that case, kudos to Richard Poynder for asking such good questions with a straight face.

What will it take for publishing executives like Derk Haank to get it? This isn't about market forces. It's a groundswell of realization by academic authors, whose research is publicly funded and peer-reviewed, that it is counter to the interests of good science to give their work away to publishers who believe it's all about markets.
