Israel Halts Flights to Turkey

The Israeli charter airline Sun D'Or has suspended flights to Turkey, a popular destination with Israeli tourists, claiming that Turkish airport officials "had introduced unacceptable changes to security procedures," the Jerusalem Post reported Sept. 10. Shin Bet security service ordered the airline, a subsidiary of national carrier El Al, to cease until further notice its usual thrice-weekly to the Turkish resort of Antalya. The Haaretz newspaper said El Al's regular flights to Istanbul were not affected, although in June El Al "suspended all flights to Istanbul for 10 days, following the Turkish government's decision to limit the operations of El Al's security agents at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport." Israel said that was insufficient to secure both passengers and Israeli aircraft at the facility, the article continued. Flights were resumed a week later, however, when Turkish authorities agreed to increase security.
