FOR NEARLY A CENTURY, the Society of Professional Journalists has been improving and protecting journalism through advocacy, professional development and an uncompromising commitment to the First Amendment guarantee of a free press.

From its humble beginning as Sigma Delta Chi, a journalism honor society founded at DePauw University in 1909, to its standing today as the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation's largest and most broad-based journalism organization, SPJ is synonymous with one thing: excellence in journalism.

Journalists join the Society for a variety of reasons. Some join for the networking opportunities afforded by SPJ's nearly 300 professional and student chapters in cities and campuses across the country. For others, it's the outstanding professional development opportunities SPJ provides through its annual national convention, regional conferences and other training sessions offered throughout the year. …
