SAN DIEGO - When the SPJ board of directors met, April 28, in San Diego, membership was the focus of much of the day's discussion.

The board discussed membership numbers, which having been falling in recent years, and reviewed a membership retention plan prepared by national headquarters. The plan includes increased communication between the national office and its members and chapters. Among other things, the plan utilizes e-mail to provide more timely updates to members and chapters and establishes methods to survey member expectations regarding SPJ.

Board members discussed the importance of a renewed focus by local chapters and the national organization on the mission of the organization. The board and headquarters will work to help chapters better serve their members, while chapters work to further the goals of SPJ.

The board will continue its membership discussions during the next few months.

In other actions, the board:

Chartered an SPJ chapter at Southern Utah University and granted provisional status to chapters at Eastern Michigan University (conditional) and Lipscomb University.

Established a satellite chapter at the University of Southern Maine. The group will work with the Maine Pro Chapter.

Granted a change of region request to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Southern Illinois University-- Edwardsville. The two chapters move from Region 7 to Region 5.

Recognized the reactivation of the Northwest Arkansas Pro Chapter. A group of members will be re-establishing the pro chapter in Fayetteville, Ark. …
