Prisons Called 'Hell Holes': Ontario Correction Officers Injured, Sick, and Scared, Union Charges

Ontario's no-frills prison system has allowed correction officers to become injured in overcrowded prisons, and sanitary conditions have declined responsibility causing correction officers and prisoners to become seriously ill, according to the correction officers' union. The number of inmates exceeds the amount of available beds by 60 percent in the 44 prisons surveyed. The government has been designing new jails or additions to meet the needs of overcrowding in the province. The new prisons will be equipped with technology to control inmates and protect correction officers. (http://www.ottawacitizen.com)
