'A Couple of Hours to Pull My Act Together'

Thank you for the article on interview skills (On the Job, July-August issue). The timing was perfect. I had posted for a new position in my company, and this morning I was asked to meet with the hiring manager-TODAY! Despite not being prepared nor dressed as I would have for an interview, I couldn't say no.

I had a couple of hours to pull my act together. I had browsed the article when my Work & Family Life first arrived. Today I pulled it out, read it thoroughly and made notes based on the sample questions you provided.

In the interview, I was asked what is most challenging to me in my current job, which I equated to your "describe your weaknesses" question. I was also asked what I want from the new position, and I used the answer I had created for the "what is important to you in a job" question from the article.

It was a great help to have thought through those questions and to have some answers prepared-before meeting the prospective new boss face-toface. I knew what I wanted to say and what I didn't want to say. Having answers in my head also allowed me to listen more closely to what the interviewer was saying about the job. …
