The joy of Christmas starts when Julia and I fight our way to the back of the attic to haul out the precious holiday cargo that has accumulated over the past 17 years. Our boxes are not filled with Christopher Radko ornaments but treasures like the Santa face with cotton-ball cheeks that Robert made in preschool and Julia's collection of Cab-- bage Patch angels from McDonald's Happy Meals, circa 1994. One box holds Grandma Lange's paper ornaments from Denmark and a trove of safety-pin dolls that Memere made, These are treasures more precious than gold that we welcome every year like old friends to our holiday home.
