USA Healthnet Deal Expands Walgreens' Mail-Order Business

Walgreens has a new vehicle to deliver maintenance drugs to some 13 million USA Healthnet patients around the country. The Deerfield, Ill.-based operation has a mail-service pharmacy business forged through a marketing alliance with USA Healthnet, the nation's largest preferred-provider organization.

The strategic marketing alliance, tied together in late April, vastly expands the reach of Healthcare Plus, Walgreens' mailorder pharmacy subsidiary that was formed officially last September.

In addition to linking itself with the mail-order pharmacy arm of the nation's most profitable operator of drug stores, Phoenix-based USA Healthnet has brought Restat, the claims-processing company based in West Bend, Wis., into the fold. Restat, which network, connects some 35,000 pharmacies nationwide.

In a prepared statement detailing the chain's third-quarter earnings results, Walgreens president Daniel Jorndt said: "The alliance with USA Healthnet helps create the first national PPO pharmacy network to integrate both retail and mail-order companies."

One source familiar with Healthcare Plus said that Walgreens, a mail-order pharmacy player to some degree since 1983, has actually become much more aggressive in the field over the past couple of years. He cited as examples the recently inked deals Healthcare Plus signed with Alcoa and The New York Times Co., plus the impending debut of a new distribution facility. A company spokesman confirmed that Walgreens, which has and will continue to utilize a facility in Phoenix, is scheduled to unveil a 37,000-sq. ft. state-of-art mail-order plant in Orlando during September.

Walgreens would not disclose how many clients it currently offers this service to, or what percentage of its Rx volume Healthcare Plus represents. …
