Caremark Establishes Its Own Venue Apart from Baxter Int'l

Caremark International Inc., formerly a child of Baxter International Inc., is stepping out on its own with the help of an expanded staff of pharmacists.

The new organization, known as Caremark Health Care Services, will provide outpatient services in such settings as clinics and patients' homes. Caremark currently has 230 sites throughout the United States that offer home intravenous therapies, HIV/AIDS care, women's health programs, hemophilia care, immune therapies, orthopedic and rehabilitation therapies, and prescription drug services.

Pharmacists play a vital role in providing these services, a spokesman for Caremark told Drug Topics. "Our pharmacists are very much counselors," he said. "They don't operate only at the director of the physicians; they provide feedback in quality assurance. About 250 pharmacists are in constant touch with physicians and offer suggestions about alternate drugs, for instance."

An additional 250 pharmacists have been brought aboard Caremark's prescription service division, newly established as a result of the Caremark spinoff, the spokesman said. Prescription Service operates mail-order pharmacies for maintenance medications as part of Rx medication management systems. …
