PayLess Goes for Drama in Its New Store Design

After experimenting with new concepts in Rohnert Park, Calif., PayLess Drug Stores officially unveiled its new prototype in Sandy, Utah, in late May. It is the most dramatic new look for the Wilsonville, Ore.-based chain since it angled gondolas in its stores.

Chain president Tim McAlear said he hopes the new design will transform PayLess into a "destination retail health-care provider." Added McAlear, "We want to meet our customers' expectations ofwhat a drugstore should be." McAlear hopes to make PayLess the first store people think ofwhen shopping for health-care items.

The 27,750-sq. ft. store, in a Salt Lake City suburb, features a boutique approach in six core categories, such as pharmacy, cosmetics, and photoprocessing.

PayLess has made a major upgrade in cosmetics; the store in Sandy sells Clinique and Estee Lauder supplied via secondary sources. Capping off the cosmetics department, is a stunning bath section, featuring lines such as Cosmyl and Caswell-Massey. PayLess is the second major drug chain to take a plunge into the growing bath area. Thrift Drug also has bath boutiques in select stores.

In addition to a concentration on beauty items, PayLess is also focusing on health-related areas. …
