Simone to Leave McKesson 'To Explore Managed Care'

Thomas B. Simone, president of McKesson Drug Co., is leaving the distribution giant at the end of the fiscal year. Although Simone said he is leaving "to seek new opportunities" in the managed care field, news of his departure comes on the heels of disappointing financial results for the first half of the year (see story, page 88).

McKesson Drug, like other wholesalers and distributors, is struggling to keep up with changes brought about by the accelerating move to managed care. McKesson Drug is the largest of McKesson Corp.'s operating companies and the only unit in which increased profits have not followed sales increases.

Since January, McKesson Drug has cut its work force of 4,000 by 5% and closed several distribution centers. Work force reductions will continue through the end of the year.

Simone's resignation is effective next March 31. David McDowell, president and COO of parent McKesson Corp., will take over management of the distribution company until a successor is chosen. …
